Abstract
The purpose of the research was to determine how Kaili fishermen know about the customs and beliefs in fishermen's lives. Apart from that, to find out the meaning and symbols in ceremonies related to fishing work in Petapa Village. The results of the research show that fishermen in Petapa village still maintain the culture or customs that they believe in until now fishing in the sea in the form of habits or taboos that exist at sea. Food is the main thing for fishermen in Petapa village. Apart from that, they have knowledge of how they catch fish and knowledge of good weather conditions, bad weather conditions, when is the right month to fish and the movement of sea water. Pamali or taboos are something that fishermen in Petapa village really believe in because it has been passed down from generation to generation and was believed by their ancestors since ancient times when fishermen were fishing, they already knew what things they would bring when fishing and vice versa. things you should not bring when fishing. Apart from that, the meanings and symbols in traditional fishing ceremonies in Petapa village believe in carrying out pompaura rituals and boat safety ceremonies with offerings of food or offerings such as chicken, chicken eggs, 4-colored pulut rice, tula bala, ose yeast tagambe, areca nut, siri, tobacco, lime, and offerings of food such as chicken, chicken eggs, and traditional cakes with offerings of certain foods will bring blessings, health, safety when fishing in the sea, get rid of all diseases, not get disturbed by sea devils and get abundant results for fishermen's lives
